in newtown, connecticut. today, we'll remember the victims. we'll also go in depth on where the investigation stands, and talk with dr. sanjay gupta and drew pinsky, about what medical science has learned about the mind of a killer. we'll also look ahead of where do we go from here? especially when it comes to the right to bear arms in the united states, and what president obama called the nation's epidemic of gun violence. we want to welcome our viewers in the united states and around the world. i'm wolf blitzer. we begin our special edition of "the situation room" by focusing in on the search for answers. why? why would a 20-year-old man kill his mother, then gun down 20 children and six adults at the sandy hook elementary school before taking his own life? why? police are not the only ones pouring over the evidence, exploring answers. medical investigators are all over this case as well. let's go to our chief medical correspondent dr. sanjay gupta. he is joining us now. now, sanjay, you have been taking a very close look, potentially at the mind of a killer. >> yeah, and that question, why
of the united states on friday, choked back tears. this is a very sad day, of raw emotion here in newtown, connecticut, as families begin burying the children killed in the massacre at the sandy hook elementary school right down the road from where we are right now. we're watching all of this unfold, and the pain is clearly, clearly evident. while every day here in new town is sad, today, it's especially, it's especially sad. this afternoon, the first funerals were held for victims of the elementary school massacre. connecticut's governor, you just saw him here, he attended one of the services today, and he summed it up this way, and i'm quoting him, you see little coffins and your heart starts to ache. as this town and the nation tries to come to grips with this huge, huge tragedy, the investigation is focusing in on the question why. some of the answers may come from a computer found in the home where the gunman, adam lanza, lived with his mother. cnn's national correspondent deborah feyerick is keeping track of the latest developments. she's joining us now live with more. what are you

to pennsylvania. i'm ed payne reporting. >>> news time right now 6:31. the people of newtown, connecticut observed christmas with heavy hearts. it's been less than two weeks since the shooting at sandy hook elementary school claimed the lives of 20 children and six adults. a candlelight vigil was held all day long in newtown. 26 candles were lit monday at midnight. the volunteers spent three-hour shifts making sure those candles stayed burning. many people are turning to their faith right now to help them get through this very difficult time. >> we feel our hearts are broken in 26 little pieces, but it's the birth of jesus and we find strength in that, and so we're mourning, but we're also thinking of god at this time, that he'll give us the strength of his son. >> police officers from neighboring communities filled in for newtown police so all of them could have the holiday off and be with their families. >>> a newspaper outside of new york city is causing quite a controversy this morning. it published an interactive map showing the names and addresses of all handgun permit holders in new york's

this is reported i thought was redundant, like saying president obama's speech in n newtown was a call to scripture and prayer. it wasn't what he was talking about but he referenced scripture and prayer. the first words out of his mouth, the lord is already near, come, let us adore him. it was a spiritual message. in the middle of the message he reflected on the traditional family which we know the church supports and has long supported. and defended. and he made glancing reference to our personal selfishness and said that's a threat to the family. people not wanting to make commitments. and therefore give of their time and their energy to have families in the first place. and then he made reference to this manipulation of nature. but he never mentioned gay marriage. he never mentioned gay people in there. so i think, you know, it is it was certainly one can interpret that was the focus of what he was talking about in that particular paragraph. but i think to characterize the whole message that way is reductive. he was calling all of us to task for various failings, in our personal lives, and i thi

story "outfront" tonight. guns in america. politicians promised the newtown massacre would change everything. but since it happened just two weeks ago today, 277 people in this country are dead because of gun violence. according to a tally compiled by "slate." americans are sending mixed messages where they stand. a new gallup poll shows 54% have a favorable opinion of the national rifle association which is adamant new gun laws are not the answer to stemming violence, down slightly from a year ago. on the other hand, a poll by "the washington post" and abc shows 52% of americans favor banning semiautomatic weapons, 59% support banning high-capacity clips.
